Maldives in 4 Days: Malé & Maafushi Travel Guide

A short Maldives getaway from Dhaka, exploring Malé and Maafushi. With busy careers, my wife and I wanted a few days to just slow down.

Maldives in 4 Days: Malé & Maafushi Travel Guide

If you want to experience the Maldives without spending your entire holiday inside a luxury resort, Malé + Maafushi is a great option.

My wife and I took this route for a short anniversary getaway. With both of us working full-time, the idea was simple: take a few days off, slow down, roam around and enjoy some proper time away from work.

Here's a practical breakdown if you're planning something similar.

🇲🇻 Trip Overview

  • Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights

  • Route: Dhaka → Malé → Maafushi → Malé Airport → Dhaka

  • Stay: 1 night Malé + 2 nights Maafushi

  • Style: Budget-friendly island exploration

  • Highlights: Beaches, snorkelling, sandbank, parasailing and kayaking

💰 Estimated Cost Per Person

A realistic budget from Dhaka is around BDT 75,000–100,000 (USD 615–820) per person.

  • ✈️ Return flight: BDT 50,000–60,000 / USD 410–490

  • 🏨 Accommodation: BDT 5,500–9,500 / USD 45–78

  • 🚤 Speedboat: BDT 5,000–6,500 / USD 41–53

  • 🍛 Food: BDT 7,000–10,000 / USD 57–82

  • 🌊 Activities: BDT 7,500–12,500 / USD 61–102

  • 💵 Miscellaneous: BDT 2,000–3,000 / USD 16–25

These are approximate planning figures. Your actual cost will depend mainly on airfare, hotel and activities.

🗓️ The Itinerary

Day 1 — Dhaka → Malé

Fly from Dhaka to Velana International Airport and spend your first night in Malé.

Keep the day simple:

  • Walk around the city

  • Explore the waterfront

  • Visit local shops and markets

  • Try some Maldivian food

Malé is busy and densely populated, but it's interesting to see the everyday side of the Maldives before heading to the islands.

Day 2 — Malé → Maafushi

Take a morning speedboat to Maafushi.

After checking in, don't rush into activities. Maafushi is small enough to explore on foot, so spend the afternoon simply roaming around.

  • Explore the local streets

  • Walk along the beach

  • Find a café or restaurant

  • Watch the sunset

If you're going to rely on Google Maps, messaging or online bookings while moving between islands, sorting out mobile data before leaving home is one less thing to worry about. I used Holafly eSim and this option worth checking (Enjoy 10% off as well !!!).

Day 3 — Maafushi Adventure Day

Keep this as your main activity day.

Morning half-day tour:

  • 🤿 Snorkelling

  • 🏝️ Sandbank visit

  • 🚤 Boat trip

Afternoon:

  • 🪂 Parasailing

  • 🛶 Kayaking

  • 🏖️ Beach time

You can arrange these through local operators in Maafushi. Compare what each package includes before booking.

Day 4 — Maafushi → Airport → Dhaka

Take the speedboat from Maafushi back to Velana International Airport and fly home.

Leave enough buffer between your boat arrival and international flight. Weather and sea conditions can affect island transfers.

🏝️ Why Maafushi?

Maafushi is a local inhabited island, so don't expect the isolated luxury-resort experience.

Instead, you get:

  • Beautiful beaches

  • Turquoise water

  • Local restaurants and cafés

  • Affordable accommodation

  • Snorkelling and boat trips

  • Sandbanks and island excursions

  • Parasailing and kayaking

  • An island that's easy to explore on foot

For travellers who'd rather roam around than spend the entire holiday inside a resort, that's a pretty good trade-off.

🏨 Finding a Hotel

There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses in both Malé and Maafushi. When comparing them, look beyond the headline room price and check the final amount, location, breakfast and cancellation policy.

🛂 Before You Fly

One thing you don't want to leave until the last minute is the entry paperwork.

Tourists generally receive a Maldives tourist visa on arrival if they meet the entry requirements. You'll also need to complete the Traveller Declaration through IMUGA within 96 hours before arrival.

👉 Official IMUGA Traveller Declaration

The declaration is free. Use the official government portal rather than paying a third party to submit it.

💡 A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • 🚤 Confirm your speedboat before travelling.

  • ✈️ Keep a generous buffer before your return flight.

  • 🌦️ July can bring rain, so keep outdoor plans flexible.

  • 💵 Carry some cash for smaller purchases.

  • ☀️ Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential.

  • 🤿 Compare activity packages before booking.

  • 👟 Walk around Maafushi instead of planning every minute.

  • ☕ Leave some empty time. The whole point is to slow down.

Final Thoughts

For a short getaway from Dhaka, Malé + Maafushi works really well.

One night gives you a taste of the capital, while two nights in Maafushi give you enough time for beaches, island exploration and a proper day of water activities.

It's not the luxury-resort version of the Maldives.

It's the walk-around, get-on-a-boat, jump-in-the-water, eat-something-good and enjoy-the-view version.

And for a four-day escape, that's exactly what we were looking for.
